Embark on a thrilling 4-day jeep adventure through Ha Giang, Vietnam’s most remote and visually stunning frontier. This off-the-beaten-path journey winds through soaring mountain passes, ancient villages, ethnic markets, and the dramatic Ma Pi Leng Pass - offering a rare look into the daily life of the H’mong people and other highland communities. From trekking cliffside trails to kayaking on the jade-colored Nho Que River, every moment immerses you in authentic culture and breathtaking natural beauty.

Day 1: Hanoi sleep bus to Ha Giang

Day 4: Meo Vac - Ha Giang - Sleep bus back to Hanoi

Day 2: Ha Giang - Dong Van

Morning

Your first day on the road begins in Ha Giang, where you hop into your open-air jeep and head north on one of the most scenic drives in Southeast Asia. The journey covers roughly 80 kilometers - from emerald rice terraces and dramatic limestone peaks to quiet hill tribe villages nestled deep in the valleys.

Follow the historic Cu Vuong Road, once used by the H’mong King’s horsemen, and feel history come alive beneath your wheels.

If it’s a Saturday, you’ll have the chance to stop at Minh Tan Market, where locals from surrounding highlands gather to trade textiles, produce, and handmade tools. The market is a lively, colorful affair - an ideal place to witness daily life among the ethnic minorities of the region.

As you ascend the twisting Bac Sum Slope, the temperature drops and the air grows crisp. The landscape transforms into towering mountains and plunging valleys.

Soon, you’ll arrive at the Quan Ba Sky Gate, a natural mountain pass that offers breathtaking views over the valley floor below. From here, admire the perfectly rounded Quan Ba Twin Mountains, often compared to a fairy’s bosom in local folklore - symbols of fertility and legend in H’mong culture.

The road continues to the Can Ty Wall, a natural wonder where the Mien River flows gracefully between sharp limestone cliffs. The view is dramatic and peaceful, a perfect moment for reflection before continuing deeper into the highlands.

Next, you’ll reach the winding turns of Tham Ma Slope, a place once used to test the endurance of packhorses. Stop at the top to soak in panoramic views and breathe in the thin, clean air.

Your route takes you through Pho Cao Village, where stone houses and blooming buckwheat flowers line the road. Here, visit a local home to learn about the Khen, or "pan-pipe" - a traditional wind instrument central to H’mong music and courtship rituals.

Afternoon

After a hearty lunch, continue to the imposing H’mong King Palace, the former residence of the influential Vuong family.

Built in the early 20th century, this fortress-like mansion showcases a unique blend of French and Chinese architectural influences. Explore the courtyards, stone walls, and wooden halls that once served as a political center of the region.

Evening

As the sun begins to dip behind the peaks, you arrive in Dong Van, a charming mountain town known for its preserved earthen houses and cobblestone streets.

Join your host family and fellow travelers for a delicious, locally sourced dinner, then check in your welcoming homestay. Cap off the day with a leisurely walk through Dong Van Ancient Town, where history, culture, and highland hospitality converge under the starlit sky.

3 day Ha Long Bay experience

We organised with the brilliant Mia Nguyen at Best Rate Tours for a 3 day, 2 night tour with Orchid cruises on their nostalgia boat. Mia’s help and organisation was brilliant. Due to the typhoon we had to change plans but she was helpful, friendly and organised throughout. We genuinely could not have asked for more from her. The boat was clean, comfortable and with some absolutely brilliant staff. We are well, plenty of options and lots of food available. The trips we took from the boat were even better than expected. An amazing experience.
